At our regular meeting this month we are pleased to welcome Dorothy
Washburn as our featured speaker.  Her topic is

                      The Cultural Meaning of Symmetry

Dr. Washburn is one of the country's foremost experts in the analysis of
symmetries found in textiles and pottery from ancient civilizations.

With a strong focus on the American Southwest and using slides and
lecture format, she will help us delve into the meanings, and differences
from one culture to the next, of the patterns of symmetry used by various
cultures.

Dr. Washburn is the co-author of two seminal works on symmetry,
Symmetry of Culture: Theory and Practice of Plane Pattern Analysis and
Symmetry Comes of Age: The Role of Pattern in Culture.
